An Important Legacy For Newfoundland & Labrador

Main River Designated A Canadian Heritage River

The idea of preserving the natural beauty and wilderness habitat of the Main River took place ten years ago. Corner Brook Pulp and Paper supported the Main River’s nomination as a heritage river then and we strengthened our commitment by more than doubling our contribution to help create over 200 km2 of protected area. Our contribution ensures that the beauty and natural surroundings of the Main River are enjoyed by wildlife and Newfoundlanders alike.

To become a Heritage River requires the development of a management plan and stewardship agreement. We worked, with all interested and committed parties, to develop these plans.

We are proud of being the major contributor to the creation of this important natural legacy for the province.

  • But our commitment doesn’t stop there. We have stopped all clear cut logging in the Main River watershed and we’re implementing new methods for harvesting in sensitive areas.

  • We have formed a scientific working group with officials of Parks Canada to develop long-term forest eco-system management plans in areas adjacent to Gros Morne National Park.

  • We are continuing to work with the province’s Pine Marten Recovery Team and the Wildlife Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation to protect the Newfoundland pine marten.

We are committed to being good environmental stewards and to managing our forest resources for the long term benefit of all Newfoundlanders. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to find balanced solutions we’re all proud of. Just like this one.
